Welcome to the Clean Tyne Project Website

The Clean Tyne Project is an environmental partnership between

  • Port of Tyne
  • SITA Trust
  • Gateshead Council
  • South Tyneside Council
  • North Tyneside Council
  • Newcastle City Council

The River Tyne is now the cleanest it has ever been for many hundreds of years, and attracts a varied array of wildlife and fish including otters, seals and salmon. This however has not been an easy transformation considering the river's legacy of heavy engineering, social history and a general attitude that the river was a place to be avoided. Now however, things are changing. The Tyne itself is a tourist attraction with fabulous waterfronts, bridges and iconic buildings. Cruise liners regularly visit and many people want to live within sight and sound of the river.

The Clean Tyne Project aims to ensure that the water quality in the river continues to improve and to raise public awareness of environmental issues. The high profile River Bank Raids and the use of our state of the art debris collection vessel - The Clearwater, help to demonstrate the prevention measures used to clean the river while work in schools and community groups helps to educate the public.
